DCMA (Defense Contract Management Agency)

What is the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA)?

The Defense Contract Management Agency is the Department of Defense organization responsible for administering contracts once they have been awarded. While a buying command runs the competition and signs the deal, DCMA is often the body that makes sure the work actually gets done on time, to spec, and at the agreed quality.

What DCMA does

DCMA's role is contract administration and oversight. That includes monitoring delivery schedules and quality, performing surveillance at contractor facilities, verifying that products meet requirements before acceptance, supporting cost and pricing reviews, and coordinating with auditors such as the Defense Contract Audit Agency. On many contracts DCMA personnel hold delegated authority to act on the government's behalf at the plant.

Why it matters to contractors

If you perform on defense contracts, DCMA may be your day-to-day government interface long after award. A constructive relationship with your DCMA representatives, clean quality records, and an accurate accounting and work breakdown system make administration smoother and protect your past-performance record. Friction with DCMA, by contrast, can stall acceptance and payment.
