A Data Item Description is a standardized template that spells out exactly what a particular contract data deliverable must contain and how it must be formatted. Where a contract says "deliver a test plan," the DID defines what a compliant test plan actually includes, its sections, content, and presentation, so there is no ambiguity about what "done" looks like.
DIDs do not stand alone. Each line on a Contract Data Requirements List points to a DID. The CDRL says what to deliver and when; the DID says precisely what it must contain. Together they remove guesswork from documentation and give both sides an objective standard for acceptance.
If a deliverable is governed by a DID, the government can reject a submission that does not conform to it, and on many contracts acceptance is tied to payment. Reading the referenced DID before you write, not after, is the simple discipline that prevents rework and protects your invoice. Build your deliverable templates straight from the DIDs called out in your contract so compliance is baked in from the start.
