E&I, short for Educational and Institutional Cooperative Services, is a member-owned purchasing cooperative serving education: colleges and universities, K-12 districts, and related institutions. Like other cooperatives, it competitively solicits and awards contracts that its members can then buy from directly, sparing each school from running its own procurement for commonly needed goods and services.
Member institutions join the cooperative, and E&I awards contracts through competitive processes designed to satisfy public-procurement rules. A member can then purchase off an E&I contract with confidence that the competition requirement has been met. For the institutions, it means faster buying and pooled pricing; for suppliers, an awarded contract opens the door to a large base of education buyers.
If your customers are schools and universities, an E&I award is a high-leverage win, but the competition to secure one is correspondingly stiff. E&I is one of several cooperatives in the education space, so part of the strategy is knowing which one your target institutions actually use to buy. It sits within the broader world of cooperative purchasing that drives much of the SLED market.
