The System for Award Management, found at SAM.gov, is the federal government's official, free system for registering to do business with it. Almost no entity can receive a federal contract or grant without an active SAM registration, which makes it the mandatory first step for anyone entering the market. It also hosts the government's database of contract opportunities and entity information.
Registering establishes your entity of record: your business details, the codes that describe what you do, your representations and certifications, and your banking information for payment. As part of registration you receive a Unique Entity Identifier, the number that now identifies your business across federal systems. Registration is free; be wary of third parties that charge to do something the government lets you do at no cost.
An active, accurate SAM registration is not a one-time task. It must be renewed periodically, and a lapsed registration can make you ineligible for award or hold up payment at the worst possible moment. Keep your codes, certifications, and points of contact current. Once registered, SAM.gov is also your free baseline tool for finding opportunities, which you can layer additional intelligence on top of. New contractors should pair SAM registration with free technical assistance from APEX Accelerators.
