VOSB (Veteran-Owned Small Business)

What is a Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB)?

A Veteran-Owned Small Business is a small business that is at least 51 percent owned, and controlled in management and daily operations, by one or more veterans. It recognizes veteran entrepreneurship and channels a share of federal work to companies led by those who served.

Where the preference is strongest

VOSB status carries the most weight at the Department of Veterans Affairs, whose Vets First program gives priority to verified veteran-owned firms and drives a large volume of set-aside work. Across the rest of the government the preference is more limited than the service-disabled category, but VA spending alone makes VOSB a meaningful designation for the right firms.

VOSB and SDVOSB

The closely related and generally stronger status is the service-disabled veteran-owned small business, which unlocks governmentwide set-asides, not just VA preferences. Both now require certification through the Small Business Administration rather than self-identification. If your ownership qualifies, getting certified and confirming which preference applies to your target agencies is the practical first step toward using the status.
